InstaCert's Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) Course is currently approved for delivery in SA, QLD, WA and the NT, and is accepted in the ACT under the Liquor Act 2010. The course is delivered in accordance with a nationally recognised training package, and any units of competency attained can be used toward further qualifications.
By law, every person who sells or serves alcohol in Australia must complete Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) training. InstaCert's online course provides everything you need to complete your RSA training with no prerequisites.
It's currently approved in South Australia, Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory. It's also recognised and accepted in the Australian Capital Territory as it meets all the legal requirements under the Liquor Act 2010. Other states are coming soon.
There are 16 lessons in the InstaCert online RSA course:
Lesson Quizzes
At the end of each lesson you need to complete a multiple-choice quiz. Once you have scored 100% you are able to move on to the next lesson. You have five attempts at each quiz.
Case Studies
There are two case studies to complete in the course. The purpose of these is to check that you can apply what you've learnt to a real-life situation. Simply read the text and answer a series of multiple-choice questions about the best way to handle the scenarios.
Reading Activity
There is a reading activity on understanding in-house policy documents. Simply download the PDF from the course page and then complete the multiple-choice quiz.
Video Assessment or Observer Report
The legal requirements for Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) training specify that you need to demonstrate certain tasks correctly. We offer two options for this - a Video Assessment or an Observer Report.
1. Video Assessment. If you're new to the industry you'll need to complete a Video Assessment in which you interact with our easy-to-use pre-recorded videos through a series of scenarios. You can do this on any device which has a webcam and microphone, and you can complete this assessment at any time and place that suits you. It's best to complete the video assessment after finishing all lessons and quizzes in the course to ensure you understand the requirements of the assessment properly.
2. Observer Report. If you've been working in the industry and serving alcohol to customers within the last 12 months, you can nominate an observer to report on your skills. Your observer will need to complete the form provided. This is the simplest option for those alcohol servers or sellers looking to renew their RSA certificate quickly.
One of our qualified assessors will evaluate the Observer Report or video and provide your results.
Quality Assurance Process
As part of our quality assurance process, we reserve the right to contact you or your nominated observer to conduct a competency conversation or verification of assessment prior to awarding certification.
The unit of competency awarded for this course is 'SITHFAB021 - Provide responsible service of alcohol'.
InstaCert delivers the most up-to-date RSA training in Australia, and your Statement of Attainment will contain the latest unit of competency. Be sure not to complete any training that delivers the older and outdated unit of competency ('SITHFAB002 - Provide responsible service of alcohol').

The duration of the course depends on your existing knowledge of safe alcohol service and your English-language ability.
On average, most people complete the lessons and associated quizzes in about 3 to 4 hours.
The other parts of the assessment can take anywhere between 10 minutes to 2 hours depending on how you complete your practical assessment and whether you need any extra assistance with the course content.
It's not unusual for students to sign up and complete the course on the same day, but we do give you up to 12 months to complete everything.
It's important to remember that the course has been designed to be completed at your own pace, so you don't need to complete the course in one sitting - you can log on and log off as many times as you need.
As part of the legal requirements for delivering the RSA course, we need to see you perform some practical tasks.
To do this, we give you the choice between completing a Video Assessment or an Observer Report.
If you're new to the industry, you should complete the Video Assessments. This involves interacting with some pre-recorded videos using your mobile, tablet or desktop - any device with a webcam and microphone.
If you've been working in the industry for some time and have a supervisor or manager who has observed you serving alcohol within the last 12 months, you may wish to choose the Observer Report option. This means an online form will be emailed to your chosen observer to provide more information on the tasks they've seen you do.
1. A modern web browser
You need to have a modern web browser and ensure that you have Javascript enabled.
2. An email address
During course registration, we will ask you for your email address. This is a mandatory requirement for you to be able to access our systems. Email addresses cannot be shared by students.
3. Adobe PDF Reader or Adobe Acrobat
Some of the forms that you need to complete (such as the Observer Report) are in PDF format. To get the latest version of Adobe PDF Reader for free, click here.
4. A device with a webcam and microphone
If you are going to complete the Video Assessments as your chosen practical assessment, then you need to have access to any device (mobile, tablet or desktop) with a working webcam or microphone
