InstaCert's Food Handler Course is nationally recognised. The course is delivered in accordance with a nationally recognised training package, the Statement of Attainment is recognised throughout Australia and any units of competency attained can be used toward further qualifications.
As of December 2022, all Food Handlers in Australia must complete mandatory training to attain certain skills and knowledge as specified in Food Standard 3.2.2A. InstaCert's online Food Handler course covers everything you need to be compliant and is accepted in all Australian states and territories.
What's more the Unit of Competency attained when doing this course can be used towards other qualifications such as Food Safety Supervisor or certificates or diplomas.
There are 13 lessons covered in the InstaCert online Food Handler course (Level 1):
Lesson Quizzes
At the end of each lesson you need to complete a multiple choice quiz. Once you've scored 100% you are able to move onto the next lesson. You have five attempts at each quiz.
Case Studies
There is one case study, used to check that you can apply what you've learnt to a real-life situation. Simply read the text and answer a series of multiple choice questions about the best way to handle the scenario.
Observer Report / Declaration
Since there are some things we can't see you doing through your computer, such as washing your hands, an Observer Report is required. This is a simple form that you ask someone you've worked with (past or present) to complete about tasks they've seen you doing. The form can be completed online or downloaded and filled out manually.
Quality Assurance Process
As part of our quality assurance process, we reserve the right to contact you or your nominated observer to conduct a competency conversation or verification of assessment prior to awarding certification.
The unit of competency awarded for this course is 'SITXFSA005 - Use hygienic practices for food safety.'
InstaCert delivers the most up-to-date Food Handler training in Australia, and your Statement of Attainment will contain the latest unit of competency. Be sure not to complete any training that delivers the older and outdated unit of competency ('SITXFSA001 - Use hygienic practices for food safety.').

The duration of the course depends on your existing knowledge of food safety and your English-language ability.
On average, most people complete the lessons and associated quizzes in about 3 to 4 hours.
The other parts of the assessment can take anywhere between 10 minutes to 4 hours depending on who you choose to complete your Observer Report and whether you need any extra assistance with the course content.
It's not unusual for students to sign up and complete the course on the same day, but we do give you up to 12 months to complete everything.
It's important to remember that the course has been designed to be completed at your own pace, so you don't need to complete the course in one sitting — you can log on and log off as many times as you need.
The course content delivered by InstaCert is determined by the Industry Skills Councils who also provide rules about how training organisations need to assess students training to be a Food Handler.
One of the rules is that students need to be observed practising food safety skills. With online training, there are some skills we can't see you doing through a computer. So, the easiest way to meet this requirement is to provide you with an Observer Report and you can ask someone in your workplace to confirm that they have seen you do things like washing your hands correctly and wearing appropriate clothing for work.
